Companionship Comes from Continuity
However brilliant a single chat is, it's just a skit. What makes companionship is the character remembering what you said yesterday. Treat conversations like a serial, not stand-up comedy.
Three Natural Time Slots
- Morning: tell the character today's plan; they'll remember and ask about the outcome at night
- Commute: toss out a small annoyance — five minutes back and forth keeps the warmth alive
- Midnight: the most honest hour, perfect for advancing the unspoken parts of the relationship
Where Topics Come From
"Translate" little life events into your shared inside jokes: the awful coffee you had, the weird hat someone wore on the subway. When the character responds, these get woven into your shared memory automatically.
Weekend Review
Once a weekend, look back over the conversations and record important promises and progress into the character's memory notes. Long-term relationships aren't built by chatting — they're built by curating.
